What Size Skip Should I Hire For A Kitchen Renovation?

A kitchen renovation is something that most of us save up for over a long period of time and it’s undoubtedly one of the most rewarding home improvements that you can undertake.

However, it can also be one of the messiest! Not only do you have to figure out how and where to prepare food whilst your new kitchen is being installed, you will also have to dispose of the previous one. Everything from your old kitchen is likely to be removed and the waste can pile up far faster than expected. That’s why organising skip hire for a kitchen renovation is one of the most important parts of planning your project.

At Morley Skips, we’ve helped homeowners across Essex and Suffolk to keep their renovation projects tidy and stress-free. With over 25 years of experience, we understand exactly how much waste that a kitchen overhaul can generate and more importantly, which skip sizes are best suited to the job. If you’re wondering what size skip you’ll need for your kitchen renovation, this guide will help you to choose the right option and make the most of your hire.

Why Hire A Skip For A Kitchen Renovation?

Attempting to transport everything that’s been discarded to your local tip can be time-consuming and messy, not to mention possibly damaging to your vehicle in the process. A skip provides a single, convenient place to dispose of everything; keeping your home clear whilst making sure that all materials are disposed of responsibly.

This can include:

  • Old kitchen units and worktops
  • Cupboard doors and shelving
  • Broken tiles and flooring
  • Old insulation and partition walls
  • Packaging from new materials and appliances
  • Fixtures and fittings such as sinks and taps

Choosing The Right Skip Size

It’s important to consider the right skip size early on in your new kitchen plan. If the skip is too small, you risk needing a second one. If it’s too large, you’ll pay for more capacity than you need. Here’s a breakdown of skip sizes available from Morley Skips and which ones are best suited to kitchen renovation projects.

4-Yard Skip

Ideal for: Small kitchen updates

If your kitchen renovation is on the smaller side and includes replacing a few worktops/cupboards or refreshing the flooring, then a 4-yard skip may be the perfect fit. It can hold approximately 30-40 bin bags of waste which makes it ideal for lighter materials such as small tiles or old vinyl.

Because of its compact size, it’s also a great choice if you have limited space on your driveway or if the skip needs to be placed in a tight area.

6-Yard Skip

Ideal for: Standard kitchen renovations

A 6-yard skip is one of the most versatile and commonly-used skips for home improvement projects. For a full kitchen renovation involving the removal of old units, worktops, flooring and wall coverings, a 6-yard skip is typically ideal. It can hold approximately 50-60 bin bags of waste; which is usually perfect for a mid-sized kitchen refit.

This size is large enough to handle most waste types whilst still fitting comfortably on a standard driveway, but please not that if you do not have a driveway, this is the largest size that can be placed on a public road.

8-Yard Skip

Ideal for: Full kitchen remodels or larger rooms

If your renovation includes structural work such as knocking through walls, removing heavy flooring or is a larger-than-average sized kitchen then an 8-yard skip is the best option. This size skip can hold approximately 70-80 bin bags and offers more room for bulkier items like rubble and timber. It’s a practical choice for projects that produce heavier materials and where waste can build up quickly. It’s worth noting that this is the largest size skip that can be used solely for rubble and hardcore.

When To Consider A Roll On Roll Off (RORO) Container

For very large renovation or extension projects, a standard skip might not be enough. In those cases, we can also offer Roll On Roll Off (RORO) containers which are usually used in large construction projects or commercial kitchen refurbishments where continuous waste removal is needed. However, they’re also a great option if you’re carrying out a complete home renovation alongside your kitchen project and have space to store the container.

Preparing For Delivery

Before your skip arrives, it’s important to prepare for its safe delivery and collection. Skips are delivered by lorries which need at least 2.9m width to manoeuvre, so access and space are key. If you don’t have space for a skip on your property it’s still possible to place one on the road but you’ll need a permit from your local council. The Morley Skips team can help to arrange this for you for a small fee.

If you decide to store the skip on your property, here’s a few simple steps to get ready:

  • Check that your driveway or placement area is clear of cars and obstacles
  • Make sure gates and other access points are open
  • Check for low-hanging overhead cables or tree branches
  • Protect drains or manhole covers if nearby
  • Choose a level, solid surface to prevent damage or movement

How Long Will You Need The Skip?

A typical kitchen renovation can take anywhere from one to three weeks, depending on the size of your project. Our standard skip hire period is 14 days, which is usually more than enough time to complete the job. If your renovation runs over schedule we can extend the hire period for a small additional charge. Likewise, if you finish early, just give us a call and we’ll collect the skip as soon as we have a slot available.

Where Will The Waste Be Taken To?

At Morley Skips, we don’t just remove your waste, we process it responsibly. All collected waste is taken to our state-of-the-art waste transfer station. It will then be sorted by hand and machine to recover as much recyclable material as possible.

We recycle:

  • Metal
