Skip hire should be one of the simplest parts of a project, and we’re happy to say that when people book with Morley Skips, that’s usually the case! On the occasions that things do become more complicated, it’s rarely because of one enormous mistake; instead, it’s normally a few small details that nobody considered until the skip was already sitting on the drive, or worse, until it was time for collection. We completely understand why; when there’s a lot going on with a renovation or clear-out, a skip is just one part of a long process. Unfortunately though, if you don’t check exactly what’s included in a quote or use a waste carrier that turns out not to be properly licensed; these issues can turn what should have been a straightforward hire into a big problem.
After more than 25 years providing skip hire across Essex and Suffolk, we’ve seen plenty of these situations and most of them we’re well prepared for. Below, we’ve collated a list of the few notable skip hire mistakes to avoid, so that you too can be fully-prepped before you book your next skip. It’s natural to want the best price and there’s nothing wrong with comparing a few options before you book. Where it starts to cost you in other ways is when a quote looks cheap because it isn’t actually accurate; the real total only becomes clear once VAT, delivery costs or permit application fees have all been secretly added-on.

If you’re speaking to other companies whose prices looks noticeably lower than everyone else’s, it’s worth asking directly what the quote does and doesn’t include before you commit, rather than finding out once the skip is already on its way.
This is something that often catches people out because it doesn’t feel like a skip hire mistake at all, it feels like a given. It’s worth knowing though, that this actually matters more than almost anything else on this list.
Every household and business has a legal duty of care to make sure that their waste ends up with a properly registered carrier. If you hire a company that turns out not to be licensed and your waste is later fly-tipped, the responsibility doesn’t stop with them; it can come back to you. Across 2024-2025 there were more than 25,000 fly tipping incidents across Essex, with a number of households receiving fines. For businesses, the consequences of getting it wrong can be considerably higher, with a £50,000 upper-limit for fly tipping.
This isn’t intended to scare you, as every legitimate waste carrier has a registration number; you can search for it on the Environment Agency’s public register before you book. A company that’s genuinely licensed won’t mind you asking and most will happily give you their registration number without being prompted (ours can be found here).
There’s an extra step to the above that’s easy to forget: keeping a record of where your waste actually went.
A proper waste transfer note or receipt should show a description of the waste, the date it was collected and the carrier’s registration details. It’s not just a formality either, it’s your evidence that you met your duty of care if anyone ever needs to check. Ask for one when you book and keep it somewhere memorable in case it’s needed in the future.
We’ve written elsewhere about getting the size and timing of a skip right, as those things do genuinely affect the cost of your project too. A skip lorry needs roughly 2.7 metres of clear space to manoeuvre safely, a grab lorry needs slightly more at 2.9 metres and only a 6 yard skip can legally be placed on a public road, so it’s still worth checking access and permit requirements before delivery day. Unfortunately, none of that protects you if the company collecting your waste isn’t properly licensed in the first place. A cheap quote from an unlicensed operator can end up being the most expensive decision of the whole project.
None of this is meant to make skip hire sound complicated, in fact it’s quite the opposite! Once you know what to check: a proper quote, a registered carrier, along with some form of official paperwork, it takes very little time to make sure that you’ve covered all of your bases.
