We often meet clients who are just about to start a fairly typical renovation job such as ripping out an old patio or clearing hardcore from a driveway. They book a skip and start filling, then a day later it’s still looking reasonably empty. What most people don’t realise however, is that even though this skip isn’t technically full, it already far exceeds the acceptable weight limit and can’t be removed until it’s lighter.
This is actually one of the most common calls that we get at Morley Skips. It’s rarely anyone’s fault; soil, rubble and concrete are deceptive; they don’t take up much visual space but they’re heavy in a way that waste packaging or garden cuttings simply aren’t. A skip that’s two-thirds empty by eye can already be fully-loaded by weight, with no way of really knowing that just by looking at it.
For these kinds of waste, a skip is often the go-to, but more often than not a skip just isn’t the right tool for the job. When we discuss your project over the phone, this is usually when we bring up grab hire. It’s worth understanding why this might come up before you book anything, rather than finding out the hard way once the lorry has already turned up and we can’t take your skip away.
An 8 yard skip is roomy but it’s also the largest size that can be filled purely with rubble or hardcore, which means that it still has its limitations. Load it with dense material and you’ll soon hit the weight ceiling well before the skip looks full, which is exactly how overloading happens without anyone realising. Once that’s happened, we can’t legally collect it because we aren’t covered to take it onto public roads. The skip will then need to stay put until the excess comes out, which, during a busy period, can affect your project timeline and also push back everyone else who’s waiting for a collection that week.
If your skip needs to sit on the road rather than a driveway, there’s a second limit to know about: 6 yards is the biggest size permitted. If your project is generating serious quantities of soil or rubble, that’s often nowhere near enough, permit or no permit, and you can end up needing several exchanges just to shift what one grab lorry visit could have cleared in an afternoon.
Grab hire, sometimes called muck away, removes the need for a skip altogether. A lorry with a hydraulic arm will lift waste straight from a pile on-site and load it directly onto the back, so there’s no container sitting around waiting to be filled or worrying about a fill line. Our lorries carry up to 15 tonnes and the arm reaches 10 metres, which means that it can pull waste over a wall or fence without anyone needing to move it into reach first. You will need roughly 2.9 metres of clear space for the lorry to manoeuvre into position though, so it’s worth checking access first.
One grab lorry typically clears the equivalent of around four skip loads in a single visit. For a big groundworks or landscaping job, that’s the difference between one booking and several exchanges.
Beyond the clearance advantage, grab hire also tends to make more sense wherever a skip would get in the way. No permit is needed, since nothing is left on the road or driveway once the lorry’s gone, which means that your access and parking space isn’t tied up for the length of a hire period. Sites with tricky access, fences, low walls or narrow side passages tend to suit a grab lorry better too; a skip has to physically fit and stay put, whereas the arm just reaches over.
Another big advantage is if you’re dealing with contaminated soil, as grab hire lets it be lifted and removed without anyone handling it directly, which matters more than people often expect.
It’s suited to soil, rubble, concrete, hardcore, tree stumps, mixed muck away, and both hazardous and non-hazardous ground material. If that sounds like your project, mention it when you call as it might change what we’d recommend.
If your waste is genuinely mixed and includes old furniture, packaging, general clutter and bits of everything, a skip is still always going to be the more practical option. You can fill it gradually over several days, which suits a renovation or clear-out far better than booking a lorry for a single collection. Smaller domestic jobs with easy access are usually still best-suited to a skip sitting on the drive for the length of the project.
The honest answer is that it comes down to what you’re actually removing, not how big the job feels. Light and varied waste usually requires a skip, because you need somewhere to keep adding to it as the work progresses. Heavy, dense, single-material waste in any real quantity would be grab hire, because the whole point is getting it gone in one go rather than managing it in stages. Plenty of bigger projects end up using both; a skip for the general clutter and packaging and a grab lorry for the soil or rubble that comes out of the ground.
