The festive season is often one of the busiest times of the year and not just for family gatherings and celebrations. For most of us, it’s one of the few occasions that we have enough time away from work to tackle those bigger household projects and start the New Year a little less cluttered. Whether you’re finishing a kitchen renovation, clearing your garden before winter, updating your dining room or making some space for new presents, you might be wondering: can I hire a skip over Christmas?
The good news is; yes you can! At Morley Skips we will continue to provide reliable skip hire across Essex and Suffolk throughout the Christmas period, with only a few short breaks for the main holidays. Here’s everything that you need to know about hiring a skip over Christmas, including our seasonal operating hours and how to make the most of your skip during the festive season.
Whilst our lovely team enjoys a well-deserved break on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, we remain operational on the 29th, 30th and 31st of December; ensuring that customers can continue to arrange deliveries and collections before the start of January.
This means that if you’re planning any last-minute DIY or want to tidy up your property before the new year, you can still book and receive your skip during that week. However, we recommend getting in touch early to secure your delivery slot, as Christmas approaches our schedule fills up quickly.
Although most people associate December with mince pies and decorations rather than waste removal, there are plenty of reasons why hiring a skip over Christmas can be incredibly useful.
If you’ve been renovating or decorating in the run-up to Christmas, a skip provides an easy way to dispose of leftover rubbish. Old flooring, tiles, plasterboard, packaging and other materials can quickly clutter up your space, especially if you’re hosting guests.
If you book a skip before the holidays, you can finish your project properly and enjoy a clean, organised home for Christmas.
Winter weather can make garden work more difficult but many homeowners still use December to complete those final tidy-ups, such as removing old fencing, cutting back hedges, neatening drives or disposing of old garden furniture. A skip makes this job much quicker and a lot more convenient; allowing you to dispose of green waste, soil, and general rubble all in one go without several trips to the tip.
It’s not just homeowners who benefit from skip hire over Christmas. Many shops, offices, and hospitality businesses use the quieter days between Christmas and New Year to carry out maintenance or refurbishments. With flexible skip sizes available, including 20 & 40ft RORO Containers, Morley Skips can also support commercial waste removal during this time and make sure that your business is ready to reopen in January.

The amount of waste that you produce over Christmas will depend on your project and it’s important to calculate this in order to select the right skip for the job. At Morley Skips, we offer a full range of sizes, from compact 2 yard skips to large 14 yard skips.
Here’s a quick guide to help you decide:
To make sure that your skip hire goes smoothly during the festive season, it helps to plan ahead. Here are a few useful tips:
As Christmas is a busy time, skip availability can be limited. Try to book your skip a week or two in advance to secure your preferred delivery date.
Smaller roads or cul-de-sacs can be particularly busy over the festive period, it’s always good to check-in with neighbours if you’re placing the skip on a public road. A permit will also be required from your local council who are likely be operating on reduced hours over Christmas, so arranging this in advance is essential. Our team can help you to arrange a permit for a small additional fee.
If your skip will be left outside over the festive period, it’s a good idea to cover it with a tarpaulin or sheet when not in use. This helps prevent rainwater or snow from building up (you never know with British weather!) It can also help to prevent neighbours and passers-by from using the skip.
At Morley Skips, we take pride in offering responsible, environmentally-friendly waste management all year round, including over Christmas. All waste collected in our skips is taken to our state-of-the-art waste transfer station where it’s carefully sorted and recycled. This commitment to recycling reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill, helping our customers to manage their projects in an eco-conscious way.
Our standard hire period is 14 days, which means that you can easily keep your skip throughout the holiday period if needed. For example, if your skip is delivered mid-December, it can stay on-site throughout Christmas and be collected in early January once our normal operating schedule resumes. If you think you’ll need the skip for longer, just let us know when booking and we can arrange an extended hire period for an additional small fee.
